St. David High School received a bronze medal ranking in a poll for America's best high school through 2006 and 2007. Of the 21,069 high schools in the nation that were ranked, St. David was in the top 9 percent.
The high school, seven miles southeast of Benson, was ranked in the top 10 percent in the state last year. According to U.S. News & World Report, St. David met key performance indicators in a study set up to look at how schools are preparing students for college.
To receive a gold medal, a school must be ranked in the top 100 schools nationally based on a college readiness index.
To achieve a silver medal ranking, schools must have a college readiness ranking of at least 20, but not rank among the top 100.
The bronze medal is given to schools that either do not offer AP, or do not achieve a college readiness index of at least 20, but have successfully met the other two key performance indicators.
According to the criteria, St. David did especially well on the State Test Performance Index, getting a 92.4 percent, with a poverty-adjustment index of 1.06 percent. There was no information available for the college readiness category.
According to the School Matters Web site, which put out the information for the annual report, St. David has a school-wide reading proficiency of 77 percent, and a math proficiency rating of 58.6 percent.
With 175 students in the high school, there are an estimated 13.4 pupils per teacher, and 1,745 households in the St. David community.
Some schools receive honorable mentions that achieve very high levels of college readiness, but only partially met state test performance criteria.
In the Benson School District, Frank 'Chic' Maldonado, president of the Benson Schools Governing Board, received the All-Arizona School Board Award.
He received the award last month during the Arizona School Board Conference.
David Woodall, superintendent of Benson Schools, said with more than 200 school boards across the state and more than 1,000 school board members, it is quite an honor for Maldonado and Benson Schools to be recognized.
Maldonado has been serving on the Benson School Board 15 years.

I appreciate the opportunity I had of living in SD, attending school there and having caring and dedicated teachers. What a great community to grow up in thanks to the influence and caring of good people and friends. "
