The Barney-Figueroa VFW Post 6271 and Ladies Auxiliary had a successful 2008 after donating thousands of dollars to numerous organizations and continuing to stay involved in the local community.

In 2008, VFW Post 6271 was able to donate nearly $4,000 to help local groups and other organizations.

Recipients of the VFW Post 6271 donations last year include Honor Flight Inc., San Pedro Little League of Benson, American Red Cross Blood Drive, VFW National Military Service, Cochise County Meals on Wheels, VFW Riders, Widows of Veterans, Food Pantry of Benson and the National Home for Children.

VFW Post 6271 also donated $600 to help purchase CDs at Christmas for troops stationed overseas, donated $600 to the American Legion to mail packages, donated $1,000 for Christmas gift baskets, donated $1,000 to a Christmas party for veterans at the VA Medical Center Hospital, donated $1,000 to a cancer drive and $200 for scholarships.

The VFW Post 6271 also held several luncheons for the public and VFW members for Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

The VFW provided dinners for the POW/Prisoners of War, Wounded Warriors of Fort Huachuca, Gold Medal Awards for Public Service Workers and the Voice of Democracy scholarship.

Ron DeSpain, commander for the VFW Post 6271, said they had a great year in 2008 with increased membership and their fund raising efforts.

"We raised funds for service organizations we support, nation-wide and community-wide," said DeSpain.

The majority of the money raised comes from the funds gathered at the VFW Annual Golf Tournament and the Buddy Poppies in November, which are flower shaped placed around the community for others to help donate and raise additional funds, DeSpain said.

DeSpain said they were able to have one of their better years financially and had several new projects, including needed renovations to the inside and outside of the VFW Post 6271 building on 233 East Fifth Street in Benson. The VFW has also had continued success with the VFW Golf Tournament at the San Pedro Golf Course, he added.

With the New Year in full swing, DeSpain said he hopes to continue the success they had in 2008.

"We'll look for another good year in 2009," DeSpain said.
