The Benson High School tennis team opened the new season with a win last week, defeating inner-valley rival St. David. The girls' team won 8-1, and the boys won 5-3.

The match of the day went to Michael Vivian, who competed against foreign exchange student Nta Pongpreoon, of Thailand.

Benson Coach Brian Bokowski said Vivian played with "counterpunching style beautifully," winning 9-7.

In a tough match, Courtney Merrill built a 6-1 lead, but St. David's Katie McWhorter fought back, winning the match 9-8.

There were several firsts for the Benson athletes with Michael Savage, Jordan Douglas and Jann Sternberg getting their first high school victories. Katay Pelepelina and Kaysie Bauvin also earned first victories.

Bobcats' senior Emilee Douglas defeated Sally Stover 8-1. Sylvalyn Simpson beat Lavita Trejo 8-4 and Camille Decamp beat Rachel Kempton 8-2.

Later in the week, the Bobcats went against 2A East opponent Thatcher.

Bowkowski said despite missing three girls, the ladies' team came close to defeating the Eagles before losing the varsity girls' match 5-4.

Merrill fought her way to a close victory in a match that lasted more than two hours. By winning the doubles match as well, Merrill has improved to 3-1 on the season.

Pelepelina is now 4-0, winning her singles match.

The Bobcats' final victory over the Eagles came in doubles play with Leigha Brown and Gauvin using aggressive net play to win.

Bokowski said Decamp fought hard in a singles match, but came up short in a tiebreaker.

The boys lost 7-2, with the lone Bobcats victories coming from number six seed Paxston Moran.

Reece teamed up with Moran for a tough doubles match where the duo edged out the Eagles 10-7.

Vivian and Savage came up short in doubles, but Bokowski said they showed improvement in the 10-6 loss.

Sternberg won a junior varsity match to remain undefeated in singles play.

The Bobcats have two tough conference matches this week as they took on Tombstone on Tuesday, and will travel to Willcox on Thursday.
